2014 Entry – Hollywood Cameraman
Hollywood Cameraman was carved from a 11.32 kg (25 lb.) block of nephrite jade sold to me as Alaskan. Approximately 800 hours were expended over a span of seven months from start to completion (Jan. – Jul. 2014). The carving is 12” tall. Although a 1:1 scale mock-up was previously constructed for reference the pace was very slow owing to the care required to maintain the slant and positional angles of the tripod juxtaposed with the man. The three tripod legs were established before the rest of the carving could proceed. A total of seventeen manufactured measurement tools and self-made templates were necessary to achieve the tripod legs alone. The display stand was made, also by the carver, from African bubinga.
